“So you feel quite independent of Father’s wealth.” Ananta’s gaze was innocent as he resumed the barbs of yesterday’s conversation.
“I am conscious of my dependence on God.”
“Words are cheap! Life has shielded you thus far! What a plight if you were forced to look to the Invisible Hand for your food and shelter! You would soon be begging on the streets!”
“Never! I would not put faith in passers-by rather than God! He can devise for His devotee a thousand resources besides the begging-bowl!” Autobiography of a Yogi
Ever so often the newspapers compile a list of the 100 richest people in Britain. I wonder what their intention is. Perhaps, they expect readers to be inspired to work harder so they too can be fabulously wealthy and happy just like these wealthy people/celebrities.
I believe there are two kinds of wealth: real wealth and mammon (worldly wealth).
I believe real wealth is substance. What is substance? Substance is the invisible stuff of the universe that all things come from. Some call it God or Love. Without substance, the universe wouldn’t have come into being.
The mystics have taught us to seek God/Substance first. Jesus teaches:
“And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O men of little faith? Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek all these things; and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well.” (Matthew 6: 28-33)
What is and where is this kingdom? The kingdom is our real self, our true power, Substance. That kingdom is in all of us and is in all things. The kingdom is everywhere. One way to access that power is to practise being in silence.
“Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46: 10)
In our kingdom is perfect peace, energy, love, joy, wholeness, unlimited ideas, power, and all wisdom. That is what I believe to be real wealth.
The world would have you believe wealth is about how much money you have in your bank account and how much stuff you have accumulated which include cars, houses, art, stuff and more stuff?
The world would have you believe that with money you can buy all things including health. While your money could get you admitted into the best hospitals and provide you with the best physicians and wonder drugs, the drugs are only as good as your belief in them. No drugs, therapy or doctor has ever healed anyone. It is the patient’s belief in the doctor or medication that does the trick. When you believe you’re tapping into the power within you that heals. But if you don’t believe in the drugs, you could spend lots of money going from one consultant to another and they won’t do anything.
You could argue that scientists tap into the wisdom within which inspired them to come up with modern medicine. Hang on one moment! If they can tap into that wisdom, how come they never realised that you don’t have to go through the rigmarole of taking drugs. Drugs are only props anyway. Why spend money on props when you can get healing directly? Either the scientists have no idea this is possible, or those who know about our innate healing power are keeping that information to themselves. Why? So they can maintain the status quo where the masses have to pay to be healed. Even those who claim to be willing to share the information of tapping into one’s innate healing still do so at a price.
If you’re not able to access that healing power within you, don’t worry about it. It’s probably the way you’ve planned your life to unfold. Before birth, you planned to get sick by some “terminal disease” so you can learn some important lessons about love, right? Admit it, you really want to suffer so you can grow spiritually. Yeah right! I don’t buy into that for one moment. Granted, most of us have been conditioned into a set of beliefs about diseases, old age and death. When you seek the “kingdom” that you are, your real self reveals to you how you’ve been programmed with beliefs about genetics, health, nutrition, religion, etc. When you realise that your real self doesn’t get sick and is eternal life old beliefs, including those about learning lessons, fall off like dead leaves.
What is it most people seek whether they are rich or poor? They want to be loved and find someone to love. Many people have this idea that when you meet that significant other or soul-mate, together you can live happily ever after. So many people are moving from relationships to relationships seeking that illusive one true love. The relationship starts off well until ego rears its ugly head. Before you know it you are wondering what you saw in the other in the first place. You try to make it work. Maybe, if you have kids your love will grow. When you’ve had enough of trying to make it work you conclude that he or she wasn’t the “one.” You’re off in search of the next “one.” If you’re a celebrity or a millionnaire, your separation is bound to cost you big time. You end up losing a large chunk of your “wealth” to your ex-partner. Oh well, that’s how the cookie crumbles.
You want to experience true love, seek the kingdom that you are. Then you realise that you already have a Beloved, your real self, who loves you unconditionally. You are the Beloved. You are love. You know that you are loved whether you are in a relationship or not. You have peace and joy no matter what.
The world would have you believe that with money you can buy yourself your dream home, cars and all the stuff. But what the world will hide from you is the baggage that comes with fulfilling your dream. Unless you can afford it, you’re going to have to get a mortgage and loans that you would need to pay off for a very long time. If you want to keep the lifestyle you’re going to have to earn as much money as you can.
Real wealth/real self will not deny you your dream home. But why should you have to put yourself in debt to achieve this? Surely the infinite power can find a way to get you that home? How this happens is up to God, you just have to trust Him. Who is to say God is not going to inspire someone to write you a cheque, or devise means to get you that house? It could be that God could arrange for you to live in a house for free without worrying about paying rent. Seek God and then trust in the Power within to sort out the details. From the materialist standpoint, it might seem as if you had to do something in exchange. But from God’s perspective, what blesses one always blesses all. It is not up to you to worry about how things unfold just be open and let it unfold.
Many spiritual seekers have this idea that they have to play their part i.e. co-create with God. Your part is to be open and trust in the power of God that you are, pure and simple. Leave the details to infinite intelligence. However, the moment you try to intervene by playing your part/co-creating with God, you are so focused on trying to manipulate events your way, you’ll miss out on the many wonderful ways God unfolds. Put another way, playing your part is like having an intention to travel to London while heading in the opposite direction to Edinburgh.
Real wealth is our true heritage and it includes love, peace, joy, wholeness, wisdom and power. When you know you’ve got this within, all you have to do is trust in it. The Power within you reveals to you truth about reality and will unfold events beyond your wildest imagination. But you have to trust in Its way.
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” (Proverbs 3: 5-6)
God or mammon; which wealth do you choose?
