Since my retirement in November 2006 almost five years have passed. For the last 2-3 years I have been sitting in the mornings in the office of the Pensioner’s Welfare Association, where I have no work and hardly any one comes. In between for about a year I also served in the publication department of my spiritual teacher but due to my illness I was sent home. Now in July 2011 I was just thinking how to serve God? Most people are of the opinion that service to mankind is service to God. But when a person doesn’t get a chance to serve mankind or his physical condition or circumstances don’t allow him to do so then how to serve God through mankind?
We all know that unless the mind is present in an activity our senses don’t work. If someone is killed then the court looks into the motive behind the murder and accordingly awards the sentence to the culprit. If murder is committed in self-defense then the murderer is not punished. Hence intention and involvement of the mind are counted, not the actions which are carried out by the body and senses.
In scriptures it is clearly written that mental service is of the highest order. Lord Krishna accepts any kind of flower, leaf, fruit or water, easily available, as a mark of worship. Even if these are not available to a devotee or he feels encumbered on any account then an offering through the mind is most welcome. A devotee can easily create desired items in his mind as offerings to the Lord.
Here I would like to give a glimpse of my mental adventure which leaves no room for mental idleness or boredom.
Say, my Lord is in two forms: Feminine (R, 16 years old) and Masculine (K, 12 years old), and their associates, eight girls between 13 and 16 years. All these are residing in a palatial mansion of two stories. In the surroundings are gardens in which fruit bearing trees and flower bushes are flourishing, swimming pools, and play grounds. Deer, peacocks and other birds are abundant. Every day the friends, some 25-30 boys and almost an equal number of girls, come at 4 PM and leave at 6 PM after playing with them. These girls and boys are served a sumptuous refreshment before they leave.
One day I (as a lady) got involved in painting the boundary walls of this mansion, all in the mind of course. The boundaries are quite long and this work was finished after more than a month. I don’t know when I entered the kitchen and started cleaning utensils, preparing vegetables, kneading the wheat flour and cleaning the rice. Gradually, I took up cooking and serving the food to them (R, K and 8 associated girls). I am not alone in doing all this but there are 9-10 more ladies and together we make up beds, wash clothes, clean and wipe the floor.
The girls and boys who come to play with R, K and eight associated girls are treated lovingly by our group of servants. After all they are the dear friends of our Lord.
Devotion means love, and whom we love we serve too. So far, God might have utilized my services without my knowledge, whatever I did so far. Now he wants me to serve Him in the way mentioned above.
This seems to be a kind of meditation in which I am serving my Lord and his associates mentally. How can a mind which is busy serving the dearest Lord feel bored and sad? This mental service needs alertness of mind from early morning to going to bed. This also needs detachment, first from mundane activities then from unnecessary contacts. It is better in the last phase of life, and till that time one may concentrate on listening to discourses or self-study and singing the glory of the Lord as enumerated in my article: Is God-realization the result of practice?
This kind of service to Lord can be rendered anywhere and everywhere and all the time.

I was born on 8 December 1945 and had self-realisation on 20 August 1977 at the age of 32. Thereafter I automatically shifted to the devotion path and a sort of relationship developed with God. Starting as a servant to God, then friendliness with God and then started liking God in child form. There is nothing left except to enjoy divine love and feel its presence in the whole world.
